    where do we truly belong?

    NAZERUL BEN-DZULKEFLI AND KASIA KOLIKOW

    Midland Junction Arts Centre
    6 September – 9 November 2025

This exhibition explores the intricate nuances surrounding home and belonging through the weaving and unfolding of personal narratives, which are imbued into and onto objects that serve as visual and emotional markers of one’s presence—both in ancestral homelands and in the new terrains where one chooses to sink roots.

Ben-Dzulkefli and Kolikow address states of belonging as a sense of connection, acceptance, and the multi-layered experiences within spaces and communities. Sense of home and belonging are ever-evolving, shaped by experiences, relationships, and the ever-changing landscapes of our lives. They aim to capture the essence of this journey and what it means to truly belong.

    Rockingham Arts Centre
    20 August – 7 September 2025

Whether an everyday item or a treasured possession, objects hold significant weight. Our relationship to objects is complex and deeply personal. Our possessions can hold memories, play a role in our personal narratives and serve as an extension of our identity. Yet most simply outlive their purpose and value. Why do we choose to value some things and discard others?

The Weight of Things is a group exhibition that brings together artists with diverse backgrounds and practices to respond to the theme of possession and object. Artists are asked to interrogate how objects influence our lives, serving not just as functional tools but also as symbolic entities that carry their own narrative and emotional weight. Both artists and viewers are challenged to rethink their attachment to objects and to consider the broader impact of our possessions.

    National Graduate Show 2024

    Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts
    3 August – 13 October 2024

The Hatched National Graduate Show acknowledges and celebrates outstanding graduating artists from across the country. Nominated by their lecturers and selected by a panel of nationally acclaimed artists and curators, Hatched 2024 features the works of 22 artists from 21 tertiary art schools.

Now in its 33rd year, Hatched continues to provide an important platform for early-career artists, amplifying diverse artistic voices and perspectives that bring attention to the pressing issues and stories of our time. This year’s exhibiting artists address a range of complexities and urgencies, drawing on uniquely personal experiences and narratives, and exploring global concerns regarding the climate and colonisation. They tackle serious themes with rigor and humour, providing moments of levity, hope and healing.

In addition to the exhibition, PICA offers tailored professional development programs, equipping the artists with knowledge about funding opportunities, applying for exhibitions and residencies, and ways of making their practices more accessible. PICA also provides month-long residencies to one interstate and one Perth-based Hatched artist every year. In 2024, Frances Malcomson from the University of Tasmania (TAS) and Kasia Kolikow from North Metropolitan TAFE (WA) undertook residencies at PICA.
